How to calculate a tip

Multiply the bill subtotal by the tip percentage, then add that amount to the bill.

When to use this tool

Use the tip calculator to turn a bill subtotal and tip percentage into a tip amount, total bill, and per-person share. It is handy when splitting a restaurant bill or checking a percentage quickly.

How the result is calculated

Tip amount equals bill subtotal × tip percentage. Add the tip to the subtotal for the final total, then divide by the number of people when you want an even split.

Worked example

On an $80 subtotal, a 20% tip is $16 and the final amount is $96. Split evenly between two people, that is $48 each.

What to keep in mind

Local customs differ, and some bills already include gratuity or service charges. Check the receipt before adding another tip, especially for large groups or international travel.
