Fuel-cost formula

Trip miles ÷ MPG = gallons required. Gallons × price per gallon = estimated fuel cost.

When to use this tool

Use the fuel-cost calculator to estimate how much fuel a road trip will consume and what that fuel may cost. It is useful for comparing routes, vehicles, and travel budgets.

How the result is calculated

Fuel used equals trip distance divided by vehicle fuel economy. Estimated cost equals fuel used multiplied by the fuel price you enter.

Worked example

A 300-mile trip in a vehicle averaging 30 mpg uses about 10 gallons. At $3.50 per gallon, the estimated fuel cost is $35.

What to keep in mind

Real mileage changes with traffic, speed, weather, terrain, idling, towing, tire pressure, and driving style. Fuel prices also vary by location and time.
