Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply, or divide two fractions.
Simplified automatically
The result is reduced to lowest terms and also shown as a decimal.
When to use this tool
Use this calculator to add, subtract, multiply, or divide two fractions and automatically reduce the result. It is useful for schoolwork checks, recipes, measurements, and everyday arithmetic.
How the result is calculated
Addition and subtraction first use a common denominator. Multiplication multiplies numerators and denominators directly; division multiplies by the reciprocal of the second fraction. The final numerator and denominator are reduced by their greatest common divisor.
Worked example
One half plus one third becomes three sixths plus two sixths, or five sixths. The decimal equivalent is also shown so you can compare the result with calculator-style notation.
What to keep in mind
A denominator cannot be zero. When converting repeating decimals back to fractions, rounding may produce a value that is close to, but not exactly, the original fraction.
