What is an average?

The arithmetic mean is the sum of all values divided by the number of values.

When to use this tool

Use the average calculator to summarize a list of numbers with mean, median, minimum, maximum, sum, and count. Seeing several measures together helps when a single average could hide unusual values.

How the result is calculated

The arithmetic mean is the sum divided by the number of values. The median is the middle value after sorting, or the average of the two middle values when the list has an even count.

Worked example

For 10, 20, 25, 30, and 40, the sum is 125 and the mean is 25. The median is also 25 because it is the middle value after sorting.

What to keep in mind

A mean can be strongly affected by outliers. For skewed data such as home prices or response times, the median may describe a typical observation better.
